Dairy cow strains arising from conventional breeding programmes are frequently perceived as unsuitable for organic and low input milk production systems. While farmers have identified a number of breeds and strains as being ‘adapted’ to organic and low input systems, there is often little scientific evidence to indicate that these breeds are more appropriate than conventional genotypes. Thus the purpose of this study is to examine the response of different dairy genotypes (i.e. "conventional" versus "adapted") to an undersupply with nutrients and energy, which is a characteristic of low input systems with limited dietary supplementation and to provide information on the metabolic response of dairy cows to such dietary restrictions. |

Recent studies reveal that consumers respond favourably to “organic plus” products with additional ethical attributes. The aim of the current study is to explore whether consumers would notice and value further improvements in the animal welfare standards than those imposed by the organic regulation. The results of a qualitative concept test reveal positive attitudes towards the proposed production process. The discussions about fewer standards being sufficient or about options “in-between” conventional and organic standards indicate that the difference in production processes is noticed, yet it is probably valued less than expected. The added attributes need to be thoroughly considered when developing and marketing “organic plus” products, as their effect... |

In all New EU Member States (NMS) and Candidate Countries (CCs) there is a lack of support measures for organic farming, other than area pay-ments, and there is no coherent policy for organic farming in general. The most significant problem areas are the general policy environment, underde-veloped marketing and processing, an almost total lack of information measures, insufficient and inap-propriate organic production capacity, and a lack of training and advisory services. The latest EU regula-tion on support for rural development provides a framework for a variety of measures to assist the development of organic farming and is therefore an important instrument for policy-makers, together with national action plans for organic farming. The problem issues... |

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) substantially impact on goat health. Because of the widespread development of GIN, resistant to allopathic drugs, further research into alternative parasite control methods is required [1]. Silver fir, Abies alba MILL (SF), is traditionally used by Swiss farmers in order to control GIN infections of goats but also to improve animal welfare. A survey among goat farmers revealed that goat farmers use SF in winter during a period of approximately five months. The SF-ration per animal and day differ between approximately 8.2 g dry matter (DM) to 600 g DM [2]. As there is scientific evidence neither for an anthelmintic potential nor for the feed intake and milk performance of SF, we conducted a study with 30 goats. For a 20... |

Adoption of organic production and subsequent entry into the organic market is examined using Mexican avocado producers as a case study. Probit analysis of a sample of 183 small-scale (<15ha) producers from Michoacán suggests that adoption is positively influenced by management and economic factors (e.g. production costs per hectare and making inputs), but also by social factors (e.g. membership of a producers’ association). Experience in agriculture has a significant but negative effect. Effective policy design must be therefore be aware of both the economic and social complexities surrounding adoption decisions. |

Use of chemical has been reduced in agriculture for controlling weeds emergence. The use of alternative systems, such as cultural practices (mulching, flame, intercropping etc.) and mechanical system (hoe, tine etc.) has been introduced by various researchers. Automation technique based on sensors controlled system has enhanced the efficiency of the mechanical system for weed control. Mostly, low cost image acquisition sensors and optical sensor to detect the plant ensuring swift operation of vehicles close the crop plants to remove competitive weeds. The available system need to be evaluated to get best possible system for close to plant (CTP) weed removal. In the study various non-chemical weed control measures has been explored and 30 mechanical tools... |

Organic cereal production in southeast Australia is challenging for producers due to a range of e of influences such as weeds and low soil available phosphorus. Two experiments were conducted on a certified organic property at Berrigan NSW during 2001-2003 to investigate ‘within crop’ weed management and forage crop management for weed control. Sowing later using a short season wheat cultivar did not affect yield and reduced (P<0.05) levels of annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaud.). Incorporating a forage crop into the rotation prior to sowing a cereal resulted in improved (P<0.05) weed management for the cereal crop, in comparison to retaining annual pasture. There were no differences between forage treatments in weed management in the following... |

Several types of studies can be used to elucidate various aspects of the effect of food on human health. The main categories are: • Epidemiological (observational) studies with humans. These can be prospective, where the diet is recorded and health indicators are moni-tored after the first recording, or retrospective, where people who have a disease are identified and it is then investigated if their diet has been different from those who did not get the same disease. • Intervention studies with animals or humans, where the outcome is differences in indicators of health between groups eating different controlled diets. • In vitro studies, where specific aspects of the mechanisms of the effects of food or food com-ponents are studied in cell cultures,... |

Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with more than 160 million people with a very small territory of 147,570 square kilometers (BBS, 2011). To ensure food production for the huge population, the term ‘green revolution’ was appeared in 1960s with the concept of ‘grow more food’. For this, introduction of High Yielding Varieties (HYV), as well as chemical fertilizers, pesticides and ground water extraction were undertaken. As a result, food self sufficiency have achieved within a very short time. At the same time, soil fertility as well as soil health maintenance totally been ignored. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is increasing over the years in Bangladesh (Table 1). BARC (2001) showed that soil organic... |

Climate change scenarios exhibit a definite warming trend (Schröter et al. 2005), and it will have an impact on crop management strategies. Increase in winter precipitation and higher temperatures favour soil borne pathogens and can lead to an increase in survival rate and to more rapid population buildup (Chakraborty et al. 2000). In recent years, one of the main reasons for declining production of summer pea in organic farming in Germany are foot and root rot pathogens (Pflughöft 2008). On the other hand, predicted increase in winter temperatures is expected to favour winter pea over summer pea varieties. The hope is also, that winter peas are less susceptible to root rot as summer peas. However, few data are available. The present study was carried out... |

Farmers who are interested to rear calves together with the dairy cows during the first weeks of life are confronted with problems of poor milk let-down during machine milking. Therefore it was investigated whether 3 calf-associated stimuli were capable to enhance milkability of the cows. In this contribution, the effect of the stimulations during milking on heart rate (HR) and agitation (rumination, posture of the head and behaviour during udder preparation)are presented. Olfactory (calf hair), tactile (teat massage) and acoustic(recorded calf calls)stimulation were tested on 15 dairy cows with permanent contact to their calves and 22 control cows. All cows were milked twice daily. Stimulation tests were conducted in 3 consecutive weeks during day 25–51... |

The following paper reports the results of a stochastic frontier model applied on 396 organic grassland farms in Germany from 1994/1995 to 2004/2005. The presented results focus on the technical efficiency (TE) scores during the conversion period. It could be shown, that the converting farms show lower TE-Scores than the average. The implications for the promotion of organic farms during the conversion period are discussed. |

This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Agricultural systems contribute to carbon emissions through several mechanisms: the direct use of fossil fuels in farm operations, the indirect use of embodied energy in inputs that are energy intensive to manufacture (e.g. fertilizers), and the cultivation of soils resulting in the loss of soil organic matter. However agriculture can also sequester carbon when organic matter accumulates in the soil or above-ground woody biomass acts as a permanent sink or is used as an energy source that substitutes for fossil fuels. The latest empirical data on agricultural carbon emissions and carbon sequestration opportunities in agricultural systems are reviewed and the necessary land use and... |

The P losses from agriculture are controlled by natural characteristics, agricultural practices and national and international agricultural as well as agri-environmental policies. To reduce the P losses the measures should be targeted at the areas and activities that are responsible for the highest actual losses of bioavailable P. The response of an aquatic ecosystem to agricultural activities is a result of complex interactions between physical, chemical and biological processes. |
